Andros Island is one of the biggest and least inhabitated islands of all the Bahamian archipelago. This is a place of rich biodiversity and a vast place of untouched nature. You will find here the second biggest barrier reef in the Western hemisphere called Andros barrier reef. Andros island is rich with insland mangrove flats, pine forests and mixture of many tidal creeks. The island is 45 miles wide and 100 miles long and it lies just at the end of Florida. Porous limestone on the island helps to filter freshwater so the island has got plenty of it. Under the water around Andros Island you'll find so called 'blueholes' where you will experience and see the vastness and complexitivity of hundreds of different tunnels and holes that are connecting sea and land. The Andros Island reef is full of richness with plants and animals, waters around the island are rich with barracudas, blue tangs, bonefish, sea turtles, queen conch, many of sponge species, manta rays, sergeant majors and there are also different varieties of shark species. Some years ago an expedition was organized to explore more of Andros Island. They have discovered a big area that is perfect for young baby turtles, sharks and other richness of fauna and flora of Andros Island. They have expand Andros West Side National Park to close to 1.3 million acres in this area. This area will of course remain protected natural habitat with rich fauna and wilderness.
