The Maldives are formed by 26 atolls and isolated reefs which stretching from 7 degrees 10' North to 0 degrees 45' South. Some atolls are in the form as a set of small islands and another in the form of isolated reefs. The structure of the Maldives island is of coralline origin and create a form of quite regular chain. The atolls of the Maldives are very dangerous for navigators. Today there are many accurate maps of the atolls based on satellite surveys. Anyway many Maldivian navigators still claim old Commander Moresby's charts.
