Exploring cave houses in Guadix
Guadix is also known for the cave dwellings such as the La Barriada de Las Cuevas on the northern side of the town. These cave dwellings may look small from the front but their interiors are really huge. As you walk inside the cave dwellings, you will be surprised that some of them are hotels inside. This part of Guadix has an estimated 4,000 caves which makes it the largest settlement of inhabited caves in the whole of Europe. The temperature inside the cave houses is constantly at 20 degrees no matter what the temperature is outside.
Guadix has an old quarter of about a square mile that runs just beyond one of its great sight of attractions, the ruined Alcazaba which is opened to the public. It is located at an obvious part of the town from the ancient town walls leading to the theological school next door.

But a deeper walk into the actual town area will quickly see a change of design; it becomes a simpler scene of whitewashed homes with a chimney and small window. Going through to the back of the town will be some old caves that have been left vacant for a long time; these have become squalid and too unhealthy to be inhabited.
