Old villages Cara and Zavalatica
Cara is an old village with fertille vineyards bellow it. Only few kilometers to the south there is situated a small tourist village of Zavalatica. This old village of Cara has around 700 people and lies about 25 km away from Korcula town. Large, fertile vineyards are below the village.
Since time immemorial wines have grown in this village. A particular type of grape Posip is known for Cara. St. Peter parish church lies in the main centre of the village. A centuries old cypress can be seen on the square in front of the church. This old cypress is one of the oldest trees on the island of Korcula.
Church in the middle of vineyards
In the field in the middle of vineyards stands the church of Our Lady of Cara Fields. In 1686 according to the tradition Our Lady showed herself to a shepherd who was called Tasovac. The people of Cara every July 25 celebrate the occasion with the feast of St. James patron.
On the 25th of July the pilgrimage to Our Lady of the Cara Fields takes place, the pilgrimage takes place also on the 8th of September. A Chapel of Cavica Port is located in Cavica, there is a place where local boats are being blessed.
Only a few kilometres south of Cara a small tourist bay of Zavalatica is located. In the bay about 300 m away from the centre of the place the Zitna beach is situated. Beach has an amazing sea water that is reflecting sunlight enhanced by the clarity of azure water, color of sea water in that place is a mixture of green and blue.
Colors of Zitna bay and Zitna beach are so unique because bottom of the sea there is mostly sandy.
Zavalatica bay
Zavalatica bay is a little fishing harbour, port and an urbanized bay on the southern side of the Korcula island. It lies around 27 kilometers west from Korcula main town.
From Cara village leads a small asphalted road through the olive and wine groves to Zavalatica bay. Field and the road are very flat and the whole area is surrounded with fertile land. One can find a lovely restaurant in Zavalatica right by the sea with large terraces. To experience the mighty and open sea just infront of you, Zavalatica bay is a perfect place to experience this and have memmories for a lifetime.
