Forest in Korcula island
The island has one of the biggest forests landscapes among Adriatic islands. Pine trees - Aleppo pine (Pinus halepenesis) are often to find, there is also Dalmatian black pine (Pinus nigra Dalmatica), thats also frequent in the island. Cypress (Cypressus), wild olives, laurel, carob, and thick wild grown woods of hold-oak can be seen throughout the island.
There are also eucalyptus, oleander, bougainvillea, various cacti, palm trees and Australian laurel.
Aromatic and therapeutic plants of Korcula
Island of Korcula is rich with various self grown aromatic and therapeutic plants such as immortelle, lavender, mint, rosemary sage, oregano, thyme, marjoram and a lot more plants that are eatable. All sorts of mushrooms can be picked at the beginning of autumn and black bryony and asparagus can be seen in the spring time.
Korcula island is known for its endemic plant called black orchid. Town Vela Luka is also known as 'Locus classicus' named after this orchid. This town was also the place where the first example of the plant was used and found as a sample for the first explanation of this plant. Orchid has more then 35 different species that are all around the island of Korcula.
Mongoose and other animals of Korcula Island
One of the most fascinated and interesting animals that can be found on the island are mongoose (Mungus mungo), else rare jackal (Canis aureus Dalmaticus). The island is rich with its wildlife that includes wild geese, rabbits, pheasants, boars.
On a small islet of Badija can be found also deers. Adriatic sea is rich with shells, fish, sea urchins and crustaceans.
In more recent times people have noticed in Korcula a lot of bushes and other decorative trees such as oleanders, agaves, tamarisk, cactuses and others. To an exceptional richness of fauna contribute lizards, birds, beetles and other insects. Cephalopod is a pretty interesting lizard that has stunted legs and is mistaken with a lot of people with snakes, but in reality it is a very shy lizard and not harmful to man. Visitors can enjoy in singing of noumerous birds, there can be found birds of prey among them large owls who live in the pine trees, falcons and hawks. Migratory birds are an obligatory part of the Korcula island landscape.
In the beginning of the 80's they've noticed wild boars in bigger numbers, who are very annoying nuisances for the farmers of the island. Islanders use also working animals suh as mules and donkeys and they also have smaller number of sheep for mil kand meat and goats.
A few pigs are found in almost every household of a peasant. Adriatic sea around Korcula is rich with fish, you ca neven encounter dolphins and in a boat you can often see the waves there are sometimes flying fish and the flights of diving birds.
