Wines from Korcula island

Nowdays wines in Korcula are high quality wines which are produced by many winegower. Take a short trip around vineyards, find some of fine wine cellars and taste wine. From Greek times wine makeing developedi The most famous wine (and best by my taste) are white wines in Korcula. You wil find Grk wineyards and win in Lumbarda, while in the central part of the island grown Posip and Rukatac wineyards. Here is also Plavac Mali wine which is the most spread of the red wineyards.

Grk wine is golden-yellowish, of crystal clarity and the incomparable taste. Grk is a local grape sort grown on the sandy earth of Lumbarda surrounding on the island of Korcula. There it grows at its finest.
Several believe that it had been brought to Korcula from the old Greeks approximately five hundred BC, while some think that it was named by pleasant tartlet finish of the wine.
The grapevine has upright growing shoots and strong cane. It ripens in the end of August and beginning of September.
From the late harvest of grape produce high quality predicate or dessert wines.
Posip wine grape grown in the central area of the Korcula island in the villages Smokvica and Čara. Pošip wine which has been protected since 1967, is one of the first white wines in Croatia with the protected geographic origin .
The wine is of bright, straw-yellowish color, it is heavy and wobbles thickly in a glass in which it always leaves a thick trace. It is rich and of peculiar taste with the characteristic dry apricot and fig aroma.
As the autochthonous Croatian cultivar, it stands side by side with the world's most famous white cultivars.
From autochthonous wine grape named 'marastina' produce high quality white wine Rukatac. The most known area of 'marastina' vineyards are located around Smokvica village in Korcula island.
In the past Rukatac was mostly prepared as a desert wine, but today it is mostly dry. This white wine is placed among dry wines with a high alcohol 13% concentration.
Light and bright yellow color has fullness and nicely aroma. Rukatac wine is best served with seafood and various roasts, at 12 �C.
