The fortress was built in 1556 by Val de Reis count and rebuilt in 1793.

Other monuments as the Tombstone of Eduardo Pavia of Magalhaes, Statue to Bishop D. Marcelino Franco and Monument of the Antonio Padinha are also a very good place to visit in Tavira.

The House of the Craft is one of the most original places in Tavira. The space offers live ateliers, with the intention of demonstrating the techniques used in the execution of the manual weaving, the ceramic and the artistic glaze tile, the production in leather, incomes and painting on woven, the work of the wood, the croche by hand, the art of the palm, the traditional bread, the honey, the medicinal and aromatic plants and the full figs.

The objective of that House is to publish the artisans of the council, in an initiative of the Association of Arts and Flavours of Tavira. The freguesias Cabanas de Tavira, Cachopo, Conceicao, Luz de Tavira, Santa Catarina da Fonte do Bispo, Santa Luzia, Santa Maria, Santiago e Santo Estevao are part of the municipal district of Tavira.

The best of the sport
The council of Tavira has a varied range of infrastructures for the sport practice, as pavilions destined to several sports, municipal swimming pool, with four plans of water with all conditions for the practice of several aquatic activities, sports courts, among others. One of the great moments of leisure of the municipal district is the Stadium of the Ginasio Clube of Tavira. This sport infrastructure dates from 1928, having been rebuilt in 1999 and 2003. It is constituted by a field of great games, a cyclism track and a sport court.

For the tennis lovers, the best option is the five tennis courts, located in the Municipal Sport Complex. Endowed with the official measures for the practice of the modality, in singular and equal, those courts are authentic refuges of a good sport conduct. Two of the five fields possess benches, one for 400 and other for 100 spectators. If you prefer enjoy the aquatic sports, the nautical ramp is an excellent suggestion in Tavira. The nautical ramp and the wharf are located in Rio Gilaos right margin, in Quatro Aguas. It is property of the autarchy, being managed by the Nautical Club of Tavira.
